ISM Chair Susan Spence highlighted the concern directly: demand indicators are moving in the wrong direction. Combined with fresh geopolitical uncertainty from the Iran conflict and persistently high input prices (which have been climbing sharply), many panelists remain hesitant to hire or commit to capital expansion.
The Employment Index stayed in contraction at 48.7%, consistent with the broader labor market signals from recent JOLTS and ADP data.
In short, manufacturing is holding onto modest growth for now, but the combination of softening demand, elevated costs, tariff hangover effects, and new global tensions creates a classic environment of macro uncertainty.
