avoid margin calls if you don't want to lose and use a tight stop loss like 1:2 at least if you don't want to be hit by a margin call use only small lots

Tight stop loss can be used to manage the risk and use pending order buy limit or sell limit and buy stop or sell stop, it could be used for learning in finding best price to make sharp analysis skill.

When you make a margin call, you should evaluate whether your trading method has been correct or not, because if you make a margin call, it looks like your trading method is wrong.
