If you analyze currency futures volume in NinjaTrader but place trades through a spot FX or CFD broker, there is one detail worth checking before transferring a chart setup: the quotation direction.

For seven major CME currency futures, four use the same quotation direction as the familiar forex pair. Three use the opposite direction.

1. Which Contracts Are Inverted?

Same quotation direction:

6E ? EUR/USD

6B ? GBP/USD

6A ? AUD/USD

6N ? NZD/USD

Opposite quotation direction:

6J ? JPY/USD versus USD/JPY

6S ? CHF/USD versus USD/CHF

6C ? CAD/USD versus USD/CAD

For example, when Japanese yen futures (6J) rise, that generally corresponds to a falling USD/JPY exchange rate.

The reasoning is straightforward: 6J measures how many US dollars one Japanese yen is worth, while USD/JPY measures how many Japanese yen one US dollar buys.

2. A Simple USD/JPY Example

Suppose the spot USD/JPY exchange rate is 150.00.

Its reciprocal is approximately:

JPY/USD = 1 / 150.00 = 0.0066667

That demonstrates the quotation relationship.

However, it does not mean a 6J futures contract must trade at exactly 0.0066667.

Currency futures have expiration dates, and the interest-rate differential between currencies can create a futures-spot basis.

So the charts generally move in opposite directions, but they are not exact point-for-point reflections.

That distinction matters when transferring support, resistance, or volume-profile levels between instruments.

3. Tick Values Are Not CFD Pip Values

Quotation direction is only the first issue. The second is position sizing.

A few standard CME futures specifications illustrate why:

6E: 125,000 EUR per contract; $6.25 per minimum tick.

6B: 62,500 GBP per contract; $6.25 per minimum tick.

6J: 12,500,000 JPY per contract; $6.25 per minimum tick.

6C: 100,000 CAD per contract; $5.00 per minimum tick.

Even where two contracts have identical tick values, they may have different tick sizes, contract exposure, and price behavior.

A CFD account introduces another layer: contract size, lot definition, account currency, and the broker's quotation specifications.

A 20-pip stop on a retail forex position cannot simply be copied into a futures order without recalculating the actual monetary risk.

4. The Economy Still Matters

These quotation rules are mechanical, but the underlying currencies respond to different economic developments.

For example:

JPY: Bank of Japan policy, yield differentials, and risk sentiment.

CHF: Swiss National Bank policy and demand for perceived safe-haven assets.

CAD: Bank of Canada policy, the US economy, and energy-market developments.

That is why identifying the contract correctly is only the beginning. The economic context and the futures contract's own market structure both matter.

5. A Practical Checklist

Before applying futures analysis to a spot FX or CFD chart, I would verify:

Is the futures quotation in the same direction as the forex pair?

Which contract month am I analyzing?

Have I accounted for the futures-spot basis?

What are the contract's tick size and monetary tick value?

Does the CFD position have equivalent currency exposure?

Am I treating futures volume as futures-market data rather than assuming it represents consolidated spot FX volume?

The central lesson is simple: the instrument you analyze and the instrument you trade may represent the same currency relationship without sharing identical prices, volume data, or position sizes.

Discussion: Which inverse quotation is easiest to overlook when switching between futures and forex charts ? 6J, 6S, or 6C?
