Some crypto platforms do not report user activity to the IRS, but U.S. taxpayers must still report all crypto gains and income. Using a non-reporting exchange does not remove your tax responsibilities.

Decentralized Exchanges?.

DEXs like Uniswap and PancakeSwap operate on blockchain smart contracts and do not collect personal information or submit reports to the IRS. All transactions are visible on the blockchain, so activity can still be tracked.

International Exchanges?.

Some foreign exchanges that do not serve U.S. residents are not required to report to the IRS. These platforms follow the laws where they are based and remind users to follow their local tax rules.

Peer-to-Peer and OTC Platforms?.

P2P marketplaces connect users directly for trades. They may ask for some identification but usually do not send tax forms to the IRS.

Tax Responsibilities?.

Even when using non-reporting exchanges, U.S. residents must track and report crypto activity. This includes the date of each transaction, value in USD, type of transaction, and any income from mining, staking, airdrops, or rewards. Holding crypto or transferring it between your own wallets is not taxable, but selling or exchanging it can trigger capital gains tax.

How Exchanges Work With the IRS?.

U.S.-based exchanges and those serving U.S. customers follow strict IRS reporting rules, sending tax forms and tracking transactions. Using foreign or decentralized platforms does not avoid taxes, and the IRS can still track transactions using blockchain analytics.
