The Bitcoin ecosystem is gradually expanding beyond its role as a store of value, with projects like Portal To Bitcoin (PTB) pushing BTC-native DeFi forward. Its testnet provided valuable insights into cross-chain swaps and liquidity, even though some transactions took longer to complete, an issue that was later resolved. Bitlayer (BTR), another protocol focused on scalability and security, was recently listed by exchanges, showing how they are aligning with the broader BitcoinFi (BTCFi) narrative. Similar to earlier efforts from Stacks and Rootstock (RSK), PTB is working to bring more decentralized utilities directly onto Bitcoin.
Exchanges also play an important role in supporting this shift. For example, Bitget has introduced BGBTC (Bitget Wrapped Bitcoin) to give users yield opportunities within DeFi, reinforcing infrastructure for BitcoinFi adoption. The real test, however, lies in scalability, security, and user adoption?factors that will determine whether BTC-native DeFi can mirror Ethereum?s success or remain a niche.
